About Blue Bird
We took the water out of laundry detergent.
A four-litre jug of liquid detergent is roughly 90% water \u2014 water you already have at home. The rest is detergent. For seventy years the industry has been shipping that water around the world in plastic, and asking you to carry it up the stairs.
Blue Bird started with a simple question: why?
So we removed the water. Then we removed the plastic jug, the measuring cap, and the guesswork. What is left is an ultra-thin, pre-measured sheet that dissolves completely in hot or cold water and rinses clean. Eighty loads fit in a box that weighs about as much as a paperback.
Lighter. Not weaker.
Most plastic-free detergents ask you to accept a slightly worse clean in exchange for doing the right thing. We were not interested in that trade.
A sheet contains the same cleaning agents as liquid detergent. What it does not contain is the water used to dilute and transport them. And because the dose is fixed, a sheet cannot be overpoured \u2014 which is the single most common laundry mistake there is, and the reason clothes come out stiff with residue.
What a sheet is good at, and what it is not
Everyday wear, sweat, food, general grime \u2014 one sheet handles it. A full machine of bedding or towels wants two. Sports kit, work clothes and hard water want three.
Set-in oil or red wine needs pre-treating first, exactly as it would with liquid detergent. No detergent of any kind lifts a set-in stain in one normal wash, and any brand that tells you otherwise is selling you something.
We would rather tell you that up front than collect the one-star review afterwards.
What we will not do
We will not tell you that buying detergent saves the planet. It does not. What it does is remove one or two plastic jugs from your household every few months, and that is a real thing worth doing without being oversold.
We will not make claims we cannot back up. If we say something about our formula, we can show you why.
And we will not put anything in the box that has been tested on animals. Ever.
Blue
Our bluebird is called Blue. He sits on a branch on every box we make, and he is a reminder of the simplest version of what we are trying to do here: make one heavy, awkward, plastic thing in your home a great deal lighter.
